A bit about me

Drummer, Percussionist, Bandleader, and Drum Circle Facilitator, has been making his living in music for over 30 years. Recently moved  back to Edmonton, Alberta, Dean’s musical journey has included gigs and performances with: Tommy Banks, Gary Guthman (Harry James Tribute),The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Don Rickles Orchestra, The Louie Armstrong Tribute, Ekos (Edmonton Kiwanis) Singers, Ian Stewart, Ashley MacIsaac, The Legendary Platters, Andrew Glover, Tyler Hamilton, Edmonton Musical Theater and Chuck Wagon and the Wheels just to name a few.In addition to his musical talents, Dean is also an educator with 25 years of teaching under his belt. He taught for 11 years at Red Deer College in Alberta as the head of the percussion program, Contemporary Styles Ensemble instructor and head drum instructor for the Conservatory of Music. Dean is comfortable teaching all levels, all ages and all styles.

In 2000, Dean decided he wanted to share his love for drums and rhythm with others and founded Ayiko Corporate Drumming. As a Drum Circle Facilitator, Dean explores the rhythm in us all and confirms his belief that “Everyone Has Rhythm”.

Fluent in the styles of Jazz, Dixieland/Traditional Jazz, Pop, R&B, Funk, Blues, Celtic, Folk, Big Band and Swing, Country and Classic Rock, Dean can provide the perfect groove for any situation. His sound and approach to the music are designed to respect the music he’s performing and musicians he’s performing with.

Dean’s most recent project is with a local band called The Geometrics.

“The Geometrics are a trio with members Don Bradshaw(bass), Bill Damur, doubling guitar and flute, and Dean Pierno on drums.Their music is best described as rhythmically and harmonically adventurous jazz/rock fusion, wholly original, with elements drawn from the European and North American flavours, as their recent C.D. attests. The jazz/fusion label doesn’t prevent this adventurous trio from musical exploration far from traditional sources, and the musical experience for Dean, Don, and Bill remains in the final analysis, an ongoing journey.”

A sought after drummer in the Edmonton region, Dean is known for his musical sensitivity, touch and professionalism.
